Which group class to choose
Group classes look interchangeable from the outside, but they differ sharply in load. Picking the wrong format in week one is the most common reason people stop going.
If you are starting from nothing
Begin with the gentler formats — stretching, yoga or pilates. They build mobility and control, and the load is predictable. After two or three weeks the body handles intense sessions considerably better.
The common mistake is making your first class a high-intensity one. The usual result is three days of severe soreness and no fourth visit.
If the goal is conditioning
Cardio formats — step aerobics, dance programmes, bounce-shoe sessions — hold the pulse up for a sustained stretch and work well for endurance. The rhythm is musical, which makes the hour pass quicker.
If the goal is tone and strength
Strength-based group formats combine bodyweight work with light weights. The load is moderate but the volume is high, so the muscles are properly engaged.
Two strength sessions a week plus one cardio produces better results than four of the same thing.
Practicalities
Book ahead, because places are limited. The programme changes with the season, and the current times and remaining places are in the booking system.
Bring comfortable shoes and water. Most formats need no extra equipment — the studio provides it.
From scratch — stretching or yoga. For conditioning — cardio. For tone — strength.
A single class is €12, a pack of ten €100. A Multisport card covers group classes every day.
